Advent is a time for waiting, expectation, anticipation, of the coming to birth of the living Word in our lives. In this part of the world, the northern hemisphere, it is a time of darkness, barrenness, storms, and all life is safely hidden away in the depths of nature. Yet it is also a time of hope and joy as we await the coming of Jesus. But waiting is not easy.

Am I willing to stay awake, as the Gospel asks, so that I am ready
when Jesus comes? This advent let us ask ourselves where do we need to
get ready to give birth to him in our world, Where does God need to be
born and nourished in my life? Where can I allow Jesus to be born in my
life? Can I, with John the Baptist, be prepared to make a way for the
Lord? Am I prepared to give the time in prayer and in waiting so that I
will be ready to receive the Christ Child?
The Gospels of Advent challenge us to preach the good news to the poor
which enables the blind to see, the lame to walk, the deaf to hear and
the dumb to speak - Am I willing to be hear Jesus call to accept the
outcasts of today's world through the way I go about my daily tasks,
-where is the outcast, the rejected, the despised in my life? Can I
accept the tax collectors in my society, am I prepared to give them
time so that Jesus can reach out to them through me. Am I willing to
listen to the prophets of our time and listen to the Christian message
that is coming to us today? Am I willing with Mary to say yes, let it
be done to me.
We may live in a moment of darkness, we may feel the death of a loved
one or suffer from depression or other illness, a project may be
challenging, it may be hard to get on with someone, a situation may be
unjust or my hands tied by bureaucracy but Advent brings hope, a new
beginning, we await with hope for the light of Jesus to lighten our
road.
Finally, the light that has come into the world is plainly visible as
the Christ candle is lighted at Christmas, and worshippers rejoice over
the fact that the promise of long ago has been realized.
