THE MONTH OF JUNE, ROSES AND FEAST OF THE SACRED HEART

When I was a child I associated the month of June with warm weather, an abundance of roses and the feast of the Sacred Heart!  A large picture of the Sacred Heart hung in our kitchen and a Sacred Heart lamp burned before it day and night.  In our parish there was the sodality of the Sacred Heart to which my father and mother belonged.  I now treasure the Sacred Heart medal which my mother had worn at Mass and sodality meetings for over fifty years.  As a teenager, I used to make the Nine Fridays.  On the five mile journey to school I would turn into a little village and push my bicycle up a hill to the church of the Sacred Heart and attend Mass.  At that time there was a strong devotion to the Sacred Heart.  Most people knew something of the historical background to the devotion.

St. Margaret Mary’s name is inseparably linked with devotion to the Sacred Heart.   It was through her that our Lord revealed his longing to have his heart honoured.

Margaret Mary speaks of experiencing three revelations of the Sacred Heart.  Her superiors were sceptical about these revelations but certain miracles and the advice of Fr. Claude de la Columbière, SJ  smoothed the way to acceptance.  The stage was set for the spread of the devotion to the Sacred Heart.

We are all familiar with the prayer “Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place all my trust in Three”.  Many people have said this prayer in times of need.
