A DATE FOR YOUR DIARY
17th October
United Nations International Day for the Eradication of Poverty
In all countries, rich and poor, there are individuals, families and communities facing a terrible battle against poverty. On the 17th October every year, we get together in Ireland and around the world in friendship and solidarity with them, honouring their struggles and renewing our determination to work for a world where everyone’s human rights and human dignity are respected.
The commemoration in Dublin will be marked this year by the unveiling of a commemorative stone bearing these words in English, Irish and French:
Wherever men and women are condemned
to live in poverty, human rights are violated.
To come together to ensure that these rights
are respected is our solemn duty.
