(The following prayer was written for a Dominican Sisters' community but can be easily adapted to any grouping).
Leader: Come, let us welcome this feast of Dominic. May its radiance bring joy to our lives.
Candle-lighter: Dominic is called "Light of the Church". As we light this candle, we remember how he brought light into the darkness of his world. .
All: With joyful hearts, we thank you, God of mysterious ways, that we belong to the family of Dominic. We are grateful for that long line of holy women and men who from the beginning of the Order have enriched the church through living in the Dominican spirit. We thank you particularly for all the Sisters in our own congregation, both those who have gone before us and those who are living among us. We are grateful that we belong to one another as sisters in the Dominican family.
Leader: God of all creation, we are mindful that the food we shall eat has already been blessed by you through the sun, the earth and the rain that have nourished it. Thank you for this special meal and for all who have prepared it. May your presence among us give an extra taste to what we eat in the name of your son, Jesus.
Voice 1: As we remember Dominic's care for the hungry people in Palencia, we are mindful of those today who are without food, and we ask you, loving God, to give us generous hearts towards those in need.
All: Amen.
Voice 2: As we remember Dominic's concern for those who had strayed from your word, God of truth, we ask you to strengthen our hunger for your word and our desire to share it with others.
All: Amen.
All: We are most grateful on this feast of Dominic for the ways you, our hidden God, have become visible to us, in one another, in countless daily gifts, in the marvels of creation, and in the gospel which you have given us to preach. Come, God of gifts, and bless our table, our community and our congregation. We ask this through the intercession of Dominic, our founder, our brother and our friend. Amen.
