“Living in Limbo”
An event being held today, May 9th, in Galway City, “Living in Limbo” aims to raise awareness about the difficulties facing asylum seekers living in Direct Provision. The event will be addressed by asylum seekers currently living in Direct Provision, by the Galway City Manager, Brendan McGrath and Chaired by Anastasia Crickley, Irish Representative and Vice President of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racism and Discrimination. The event will be supported by the Friends of Asylum Seekers of which Sr Caitriona Gorman OP is a member. It was founded two years ago to share the struggles of everyday life with asylum seekers. Living in Direct Provision has brought huge suffering to those who have had to do so, it means taking on an institutionalised way of living, deprivation of privacy and the right to work, putting one’s life on hold, it also means living with the constant possibility of deportation, with the shame of no permanent address, with limited autonomy, especially regarding food and little or no opportunities of developing skills and talents. Many of the people living in Direct Provision are highly skilled, teachers, university professors, veterinary doctors, biochemists, artists and musicians.
