Our dear Sr Juliana Tutty died on Monday 22nd of August 2016, aged 103. At her funeral I found myself thanking God for leaving her with us for so long, a selfish thought perhaps. But being in the presence of Juliana was a space in which the tenderness of God was felt. The following morning after news of her death while praying psalm 23 (24)
Who shall climb the mountain God?
Who shall stand in God’s holy place?
Those with clean hands and pure hearts,
who desire not worthless things,
who have not sworn so as to deceive their neighbour.
I thought of Juliana.
Some years ago a sixth class pupil, Aaron, on meeting Sr Juliana said to me, “Sr Edel, I bet you love being near that nun”, and thinking that his answer might be that she reminds him of his granny I responded asking him why he might think that way. His answer to me was, “because she oozes something good”.
Juliana sat in the chapel believing that she was sitting in the loving gaze of God and in the last few years she lay in that solid belief still that a loving God was watching over us. This love she reflected to whoever she met or would go and visit with her. To the very end Juliana you were a true Dominican, reminding us all that no one is excluded from the loving gaze of God. You were indeed a true follower of Dominic, highlighting the good that is in us all so that it might shine out building the Kingdom of God for all to dwell in.
May you enjoy resting in the loving arms of God.
With deep gratitude for you dear Sr Juliana
